An- Yi- An Yi is Ji-li's best and closest friend who is going through a hard time at home just like Ji-li. Her grandma recently committed suicide and she is very depressed. An Yi is from a black family like Ji-li and her mom, who is a teacher, and is being beaten at work. An Yi comforts Ji-Li in sad times, since they are both having hard times . They make wishes together and dream together, they are truly best friends from the beggining to the end.
Du-Hai: Du-Hai is Ji-li’s dumb, annoying classmate. He does not like Ji-Li because of her political background, and strongly disrespects her. “He was a mischievous and terrible student”, as said by Ji-li. His mother is the Neighborhood Party Committee Secretary, which gives her a lton of power in the area (who later is a victim of a struggle meeting). Du Hai eventually becomes one of the Red Successors, and uses his power to humilae Ji-li.
Yang-Fan: is Ji-Li’s Classmate. Yang-Fan is a quiet and solitary girl in Ji-Li’s class, and is not the smartest kid. “Yang-Fan was usually so hesitant to express her own opinion.” Now she is siding with Du Hai and is becoming an enthusiastic communist. She is a Red Successor and doesn't like Ji-Li, either because of her status.
Chang Hong:Chang Hong is a friend and classmate of Ji-li in Xin-Zha Junior High. She is a leader and she supports the communist party enthusiastically. She is also very helpful and supportive to Ji-li. She is considerate of her situation. She is also very determined and indignant.
Bai Shan: is a classmate of Ji-li in her Junior High. He is a little bit shy, and a communist. He tries to be helpful to Ji-li because he has a little crush on her.
Song Po-po –is a caring, hard working, nice person. "Song Po-po is like part of the family to the Jiangs.” Song Po-po is the Jiangs maid who lives with them.She cooks and cleans for the Jiangs and is like part of thefamily to them. She used to be the housekeeper; unfortunately, the Jiangs fired her because having ahousekeeper became one of the four olds.
Teacher Gu: Teacher to Ji Li, and the rest of her classmates. Teacher Gu is Ji Li’s and the rest of her classmates’ teacher. There were bad Da zi bao’s written about her that they shouldn’t have a relationship with Ji Li. Teacher Gu teaches at a elementary school. Du Hai: Red Successor, classmate of Ji Li, student of Teacher Gu, bully (and the rest of the Red Successors) to Ji Li, because of her status. Du Hai is a boy that earned the spot as Red Successor in his class, and is a classmate of Ji Li, and a student of Teacher Gu. He is a bully of Ji Li and An Yi because of Ji Li’s status.
